Weapons and Combat Economy in Decaying Winter

Balance melee, firearms, and crafted premium guns so ammo lasts from night one through evacuation.

Weapons Guide

Weapons on EDEN-227 split into melee and ranged families, each with different ammo economies. Early nights punish players who spray rifles like arena shooters; late nights punish players who refuse to craft premium guns. This guide explains when to melee, when to shoot, which 100-scrap crafts matter, how gun scavengers differ from melee patrols, and why Castle and Sledge Queen demand respect. Pair it with Combat Controls, Crafting, and the Trait Tier List.

Melee vs ranged economy

Melee costs stamina and positioning but zero ammunition. Ranged weapons consume finite ammo types—light, medium, heavy, shotgun shells—with RNG-dependent day loot. The optimal run uses melee to conserve bullets nights one through five, then transitions to crafted primaries when scavenger density and raider armor outscale light combos.

Melee weapons fall into four classes with distinct debuffs:

ClassDebuffBest for
Axe / BludgeonFracture (reduces enemy melee damage and gun accuracy)Gun scavengers, armored patrols
Blade / SpearBleed (damage over time)Fast clears, long reach spears

Press T → Weaponry while holding a melee to read lethality, strike lethality, effective range, and wounding level. Spears at 200% effective range let Frontline outswing melee scavs; axes at 200% wounding fracture gunners so their AK bursts miss more often.

Ammo conservation nights 1–5

Treat light ammo like evacuation currency:

  1. Melee weak scavs during day loot and early night one waves.
  2. Headshot when you must shoot—torso spam wastes five to ten rounds per kill.
  3. Switch to CQC when a cluster is low HP instead of finishing with rifle fire.
  4. Press G to unload crafted guns before scrapping—recycle frames into new crafts per Crafting Guide.
  5. Assign one Backline player to hoard the correct ammo type for their primary.

Artillerist gains bonus ammo on pickup—let them gather light rounds early. Riskrunner feeds the TYPE-19 VULKA-MG from any ammo type; still conserve for the squad.

By night five, your team should have a crafted AKM or equivalent—not because melee failed, but because raider armor arrives.

Gun scavengers and priority targets

Not all scavengers melee. Gun scavengers—AK patterns, snipers, sledgers—demand Fracture debuffs or focused Backline fire:

  • AK scavengers burst down Frontline if Fracture is not applied.
  • Sniper scavengers punish static Backline; reposition or ping with Z.
  • Sledger scavengers survive single headshots from weaker pistols—do not waste Executioner burst on them early.

Melee scavs are training dummies for parry (R) timing. Gun scavs are ammo checks. Read spawn tables in Enemies and Map.

Bows — ammo-independent ranged

Bows use arrows instead of firearm ammo types—valuable when crates refuse to drop light rounds. Craft quivers at a workbench. Wild Hunter challenge requires 10 bow headshots for Shrapnel Device equipment.

Bows excel at unaware daytime picks and silent clears. They struggle when ten scavs rush the hold—switch to guns or melee for night defense. Drifter players should remember: firing a bow breaks Cloaked for teammates.

Crafted premium guns — AKM, RSASS, KSG

Three 100-scrap workbench crafts define mid-to-late runs:

AKM (Modded AKM)

  • 30-round light ammo mag.
  • Reliable damage per scrap spent.
  • Single-tap at range; short bursts only when scavs stack during Scav War.
  • Default recommendation for Artillerist and general Backline.

KSG (Kel-Tec KSG)

  • Silenced shotgun—does not alert unaware enemies until you hit them.
  • High burst per shot; weaker sustained DPS than AKM.
  • Strong for day loot stealth and indoor clears.

RSASS (R11 RSASS)

  • Scoped DMR with medium ammo.
  • Deletes priority targets at range—snipers, AK scavs, low-HP raiders.
  • Heavy recoil; almost mandatory with Professional trait.

Craft order: AKM first for general nights, KSG for stealth specialists, RSASS when medium ammo stocks exist and a Backline player runs Professional.

Heavy melee for challenges and Frontline

Heavy attacks (slow, high-damage swings) progress Challenges like Smasher, Chopper, and Blademaster while powering Executioner and Berserker kits:

  • Executioner Sword, Maria, Decimator — 100-scrap melees for burst Frontline.
  • Billhooks and long spears — reach for Executioner scaling.
  • Theourgia’s HandApostle exclusive; applies Condemn on heavy hits.

Heavy melee peaks nights one through three; swap to guns when supernatural waves arrive unless you are dedicated to melee challenges.

Castle and Sledge Queen caution

Castle POIs harbor elite enemies that detect stealth and punish greedy routing:

  • Sledge Queen detects Cloaked Drifter agents—entering Castle while cloaked often means instant death.
  • Castle enemies include high-HP threats immune to some Crosslink snares.
  • Sledge Queen drops an Agent Container with massive ammo if defeated—experienced squads raid it for late-run supplies, but unprepared teams wipe.

Do not treat Castle like a day-one loot spot. Clear surrounding scavs, confirm med stocks, and read Survive the Night fall-back plans before engaging.

Professional and Methodical traits

Traits bridge weapon stats and player skill:

Professional

  • Reduces gun recoil dramatically—pairs with RSASS, pistols, and Artillerist deadeye buffs.
  • Combined with Backline perks, enables near-zero recoil tap firing.
  • Less value on melee-only nights; swap mentally when holding axe instead of DMR.

Methodical

  • +15% melee damage—accelerates night one through three clears and Tooth and Nail challenge progress.
  • Synergizes with Executioner, Berserker, and Fracture axe loadouts.
  • Does not fix bad ammo habits—still headshot when shooting.

Other useful pairings: Calm for aim stability, Relentless for sustained Frontline trades, Lone Wolf for Riskrunner dual-wield niches. Full rankings on Trait Tier List.

Perk-specific weapon notes

  • Artillerist — pistols for ammo commonality; AKM primary; RSASS for sniper role.
  • Executioner — long melee reach over guns; one-tap chains after 12 kills.
  • DrifterDread blade during Cloaked; guns break stealth for allies.
  • ApostleTheourgia’s Hand for Condemn; guns for ranged when HP is low.
  • Crosslink — guns handle well; knives finish snared targets.
  • Riskrunner — TYPE-19 VULKA-MG for groups; conserve by holstering above 50% charge.

See Perk Guide and Role Builds for squad allocation.

Weapons are a budget, not a loadout screen fantasy. Melee early, craft smart, headshot always—and EDEN-227 stops feeling like an ammo lottery.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Decaying Winter questions.

Should I use guns or melee on night one?

Melee weak scavs on nights one through three to conserve ammo. Switch to crafted primaries when raider armor appears around night four and five.

Which 100-scrap gun should I craft first?

AKM is the general-purpose first craft for light ammo reliability. Add KSG for stealth or RSASS for Backline when medium ammo is stocked.

Why pair RSASS with Professional?

RSASS has heavy recoil. Professional dramatically stabilizes tap fire, saving medium ammo that missed shots would waste.

Can Drifter use guns while cloaked?

Drifter stays hidden while cloaked, but firing a gun breaks Cloaked for affected teammates. Use Dread melee during stealth pushes.

Is Castle safe to loot early?

No. Castle hosts elites like Sledge Queen who detect stealth and hit hard. Prepare meds, ammo, and a fall-back plan first.
