Looting Guide

In Decaying Winter, day loot is the economy that buys your team night survival. Players who treat daytime as a casual stroll across EDEN-227 arrive at wave one with empty med bags, wrong ammo types, and dehydration debuffs that turn Arbiter into a liability instead of a carry. This guide explains what to pick up, how long to stay out, how to split routes with strangers, and when to sprint for shelter before the lethal storm erases mistakes.

Day phase goals

Every day cycle should end with the squad closer to these targets:

  • Medical kits shared across at least two players
  • Ammo matching equipped weapons, not just highest rarity
  • Food and water to cancel hunger and thirst before night
  • Armor on Frontline perks (Zealot, Berserker) first
  • Utility for Support perks (Lazarus, Prophet) second

Loot is not solo wealth. Hoarding meds while a Survivalist beginner dies to scavengers is how pub lobbies votekick. Drop share at the hold before storm countdown.

Supply priority tiers

Tier 1 — always grab

Meds, bandages, water, and basic food top the list. They fix mistakes from scavenger skirmishes and keep debuffs from stacking into night. Even Backline Artillerist players need hydration—debuffs ruin aim.

Tier 2 — weapon maintenance

Ammo crates, spare magazines, and weapon upgrades you can actually feed. A rare gun with twelve bullets is worse than a common rifle with two hundred rounds for nights three through five.

Tier 3 — armor and gadgets

Armor plates, shields, and situational tools from POIs listed in Enemies and Map. Frontline picks these first; Backline grabs leftovers.

Tier 4 — luxury pickups

High-tier weapons you find late day when the storm already looms—only if you are one room away from shelter. Storm deaths delete more value than a mediocre gun saves.

Route planning with roles

Use Role Builds when splitting the map:

  • Frontline duos clear scavenger camps near the hold.
  • Backline players overwatch from windows or high POIs.
  • Support players sweep med-heavy buildings.
  • Vagabond flex fills gaps and rescues downed looters.

Call compass directions in chat—“north warehouse done, two med kits on me” beats silent wandering.

Storm timing — the hard stop

EDEN-227’s daytime storm kills exposed players. Watch sky color, audio cues, and UI timers discussed in How to Play. When storm warning triggers:

  1. Stop new engagements immediately.
  2. Path directly to designated shelter—not “one more building.”
  3. Share leftover pickups in the safe zone.
  4. Assign night positions while others manage food and water.

One storm death equals a 4v5 night. Two storm deaths equals a likely wipe before raiders even arrive.

Scavenger contact while looting

Scavengers patrol daytime routes. Engage only when the kill is fast and loot is guaranteed. Long fights attract more patrols and burn meds you needed for night. If your squad lacks Frontline perks, avoid deep scavenger bases until you read enemy behavior in Enemies and Map.

Team sharing checklist

Before night one, confirm:

  • At least one player has spare meds for others.
  • Ammo types are announced—Backline is not stuck with pistol rounds.
  • Food and water buffs are active on Frontline.
  • Someone logged trap locations near the hold.

Repeat the checklist before night six—the attrition checkpoint where many pub runs collapse.

Looting for perk-specific builds

Riskrunner needs resource awareness—loot burst weapons early or accept variance.

Sovereign and Hivemind want space near the hold; loot nearby POIs instead of cross-map marathons.

Artillerist wants long lanes—loot elevated POIs with sightlines, not basement mazes.

Pair traits from Trait Tier List after gear is stable—Professional means little without bullets.

Loot smart on day one through ten, and your team will still have meds when supernatural waves ask the hard questions.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Decaying Winter questions.

Should I loot far from the team as Vagabond?

Only with callouts and storm timer buffer. Flex mobility is not permission to die alone in the storm.

What is the biggest looting mistake beginners make?

Ignoring water and food, then fighting night one with debuffs. Tier 1 supplies beat Tier 4 weapons every time early.

When should we stop looting each day?

When storm warning starts—or earlier if your med count is already low and the next building is risky.

Do higher nights require different loot priorities?

Yes. Nights six plus demand deeper med and ammo reserves. Spend day seven and eight loot cycles restocking, not chasing rare guns.
