Decaying Winter Frontline, Backline & Support Roles
How Basic, Frontline, Backline, and Support perks fit the day loot and night defend loop.
Every Decaying Winter match asks five players to survive ten nights on EDEN-227 by splitting work between day loot and night defense. Roles are not cosmetic—they are contracts. If you pick a Backline diamond-border perk like Artillerist, your team expects elevated fire support, not doorway heroics. If you pick Zealot Frontline, you anchor aggro while others shoot. This guide maps role categories to perk examples, trait hints, and phase-by-phase duties.
Role categories and border shapes
Decaying Winter communicates role DNA through perk borders:
- Basic (circle) — Survivalist and similar perks without abilities. Flexible fill, learning role.
- Support / Generalist (square) — Lazarus, Sovereign, Prophet, Crosslink, Hivemind. Buffs, heals, thralls, bees, team utility.
- Frontline (hexagon) — Zealot, Arbiter, Berserker, Executioner (hybrid). Melee pressure, aggro, doorway control.
- Backline (diamond) — Artillerist, Vagabond (flex), ranged-focused kits. Lane shooting, priority targets.
Some perks blur lines—Executioner Frontline burst, Vagabond flex—but pub lobbies still need clear Frontline, Backline, and Support coverage. See Team Comps for balanced five-stacks.
Frontline role
Job description
Frontline players touch enemies first, block chokepoints, and create space for Backline DPS. During day loot, Frontline perks loot nearby buildings quickly but should not vanish across the map without team callouts.
Example perks
Zealot is the pure tank—high forgiveness, stable night holds.
Arbiter is damage Frontline with Knuckle Boom burst and stun utility—top pick in Perk Tier List.
Berserker trades mobility for burst—strong when kiting is minimal.
Trait direction
Fearless, Dependable, and skilled Methodical pairings amplify melee identity. Avoid traits that assume you never get focused.
Night positioning
Stand in front, not in backline sightlines. Call when you fall below half meds so Lazarus can react. Read Survive the Night for wave-specific retreats.
Backline role
Job description
Backline players delete targets from safe angles, focus armored raiders and supernatural elites, and conserve ammo efficiently. Day loot should prioritize ammo types your gun loves and spare mags for night seven plus.
Example perks
Artillerist is the textbook Backline—punished in melee, rewarded with lanes.
Executioner adds burst for priority deletes—coordinate with Sovereign distractions.
Riskrunner can backline or flex when resources allow—high variance.
Trait direction
Professional, Calm, and Relentless stabilize shooting. Methodical helps if you pace shots instead of spraying.
Night positioning
Elevated or angled positions with escape routes to the Frontline stack. Never stand in door center. Cross-link Enemies and Map for sightline POIs.
Support role
Job description
Support keeps the squad alive and coordinated—heals, thralls, bees, buffs, revives. Support perks often under-damage on paper but raise team DPS by preventing wipes.
Example perks
Lazarus healing is nearly mandatory in late nights for pub teams.
Sovereign thralls split raider focus—S-tier team multiplier.
Hivemind area denial slows pushes into kill zones.
Prophet and Crosslink scale with communication—premade heaven, pub skill floor higher.
Trait direction
Calm and Survivor keep Support upright while casting abilities under fire.
Day duties
Loot meds and utility even if you personally use melee less. Support players who arrive at night empty-handed force wipes.
Basic / fill role
Survivalist and flexible Vagabond picks cover holes when matchmaking gives you triple Frontline queues. Fill players rotate between secondary Frontline and emergency Backline—communicate which you are doing each wave.
Role synergy across phases
| Phase | Frontline | Backline | Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day | Nearby loot, scout patrols | Long-range overwatch routes | Meds, utility, team carry |
| Storm | Shelter first, share food/water | Same | Confirm team accounted for |
| Night | Anchor choke | Priority fire | Abilities on cooldown rotation |
Build your role path
Start Beginner Build on Survivalist, choose a role you enjoy from watching teammates, unlock a ranked perk via Grind XP, and pair traits from Trait Tier List. Configure Controls for your role—melee binds for Frontline, ADS for Backline. Track role balance patches on Trello. No Codes alter roles. Avoid Scripts and use Tools only as planners, not in-match cheats.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Decaying Winter questions.
Can I play Frontline as Artillerist?
You can try, but diamond Backline perks suffer melee penalties. You hurt team DPS and die faster—pick Zealot or Arbiter instead.
How many Support perks does a team need?
At least one heal or control source for nights six through ten. Lazarus, Hivemind, or Sovereign each satisfy different Support jobs.
What if everyone picks Frontline in matchmaking?
Flex to Support or Backline even if it is not your main. Wins beat ego; Survivalist fill with Calm stabilizes lobbies.
Do roles change during the storm?
Everyone becomes a survival role—seek shelter, manage food and water, regroup. Resume combat roles when night starts.
Where are roles listed officially?
Border shapes and perk descriptions in-game define roles. This wiki maps them to co-op strategy; confirm details on Trello after patches.
